Vermicomposting(2009)Phase I

Conversion of biomass and animal excreta with earthworm (Eisenia foetida) into black granular crumbly powder is vermicompost. Animal excreta and biomass in mixed and digested with earthworms in a bed. 1 Kg earthworm/10 Kg biomass and animal excreta ratio was standardize to initiate vermicomposting in the beginning. After multiplication of earthworms large quantities of dung and biomass can be converted in heaps depending on the availability of space and composting material. Temporary shade and protection from rain was provided with bamboo or wooden poles and plastic cover to reduce the cost. The appearance of black layer on top of vermibeds indicated harvest stage of the compost. The earthworms can be collected on the side of the bed by keeping a basket of fresh dung. The worms will move to the fresh dung and vermicompost can easily be collected from the digested beds. The first lot of vermicompost takes longer period for its preparation and is ready within 3 months and the subsequent lots takes less time period of 30-40 days. Vermicompost was core activities for cash earnings of organized women groups through sale to invest in monthly savings in bank and was compulsory activity for all women trained in any other livelihood activity.
